"It’s all about quality of life and finding a happy balance between work, friends and family"
– Philip Green
It is essential to create or find a balance in the work that you do and the day-to-day life that you live, if you truly want a life filled with meaning.
It may seem, in this never-ending cycle, impossible for you to find this balance. You work long hours, have family and social commitments, that include your friends and the community, and you still need to find some “me” time for yourself. However below are some examples of our very own SSS employees (your colleagues & friends) who have successfully achieved this.
These employees have worked hard, putting in time, effort and dedication, to find a work-life balance that resulted in them reaching their goals.
Cyprian Simphiwe Mushe is married with two children. It took him 4 years to complete his book “ Halala Nqobile” (“Congratulations Nqobile”) and become a published author. He did this whilst working as a full-time supervisor for SSS. By keeping a notebook in his pocket, his was always able to jot down notes and ideas which he could use and put into his book during his spare time.
Like many people, Cyprian had a dream but he did not let obstacles stand in his way. Coming from a very poor background he did not think he was good at speaking but knew he was a good listener. He put that skill to good use, committing to actively listening and then writing down all his experiences and creating a story for all to appreciate. Cyprian does not rely on outside forces to motivate him. He knew that in order to achieve success he would need to be dedicated, manage his time wisely and spend many hours perfecting his work. Cyprian acknowledges that the process of writing a book is not easy, but it was worth it in the end. He would like his example to be a model for others to follow.
Cyprian says: “Everyone has a talent, some never use it or they underestimate themselves, I don’t underestimate myself, I don’t think small”
Strike force member Mondli Gwala, is married with four children. It took him over 4 years of hard work and dedication to study and achieve his goal of graduating with a Bachelor of Education degree.
It was challenging for him to balance his full-time job, his family and his ongoing education but he persevered and with the help of a loving and supportive wife to encourage him and a commitment to daily study (on average 2 hours before sleep and 2 hours after waking up, every day), he achieved his goals.
Mondli says: “Potential, dedication and perseverance – if you work according to these words, then anything is possible”
Other employees give of themselves selflessly in the community. One such employee is Celubuhle Thembinkosi Khomo who recently received an award from the Upper Highway Community
for his efforts in finding & rescuing a local man who had been missing for 3 days.
Perhaps sport is your thing. Over the years SSS has had many men & women sports stars including soccer players, karate practitioners and the like who have created time, in their busy lives, to pursue and perfect their passion. Recently, in KZN, the SSS Soccer Team, whose players include SSS employees from the KZN region, won the Hammersdale Workers Tournament. This tournament included a number of teams from local businesses including RCL. For their effort & hard work they were awarded soccer kit for the team

We also have many dedicated runners on our staff. Recently Siphesihle Amos Magwanyana, from SSS KZN, took part in the greatest road race in the world, the 2017 Comrades Marathon. His determination & perseverance led him to achieve a position of 428 out of a field of over 17 000 runners in a time of 7 hours 28 minutes. That is a absolutely remarkable achievement, well done!

All of these people are an outstanding example for us to follow and a true inspiration. They have found what they love to do and have made a conscious effort to devote time and practice doing it, in order to achieve their own personal goals, . Thank you to all of you for sharing your story.
Your job is important, but dedicating some of your free time to following your passion, a goal or hobby is necessary not only to relieve stress but also to create balance in your life. Whatever you choose to do, be it learning a new skill, furthering your education through formal study, playing sports or helping in your community, by committing to this and putting in time & effort to achieve a positive outcome, you will be working towards finding your work-life balance, building a life filled with quality & meaning and one you enjoy living.
