#6 SSS Security Tip | Reacting When Your Safety Is Threatened

Sharing is caring!

Safety is something that happens between your ears, not something you hold in your hands.

– Jeff Cooper, US Marine

How will you react if you or your family’s safety is threatened? In horror movies nobody aspires to be like the ‘blond bimbo’ who either closes her eyes whilst screeching non-stop and waiting for someone else to handle the problem or rushes off into the dark (room, alley, forest etc.) screaming or blabbering, without making even a basic attempt to be calm, alert and aware, in the hopes of eventually making it out alive. Rather, in ‘real-life’, it would be in your best interests to  make every effort to be calm, remain alert (in order to respond quickly) and be aware of what is going on around you (so you can identify / report information accurately), to increase the likelihood of staying alive.

It is impossible to plan for every threatening situation, but it is necessary to react appropriately as and when your safety is threatened. There is no need to act the hero by focusing time and attention to grand gestures, rather apply the following principles to each safety threatening situation you face:-

5 Things to do when your safety is threatened

  1. Stay Calm (Do not panic).
  2. Be Alert (keep your mind and body ready to react quickly as and when necessary).
  3. Be Aware (use your 5 senses to orientate yourself and store the information for use when necessary).
  4. Think, Before You Act (even ‘split second’ decisions require rational thought before acting).
  5. Don’t Be A Hero, do what needs to be done to stay alive.

Your greatest weapon is your mind, use it wisely, in every situation.
