If you reveal your secrets to the wind, you should not blame the wind for revealing them to the trees

— Kahlil Gibran

The most basic premise of security is to ensure that your private and confidential information is kept secure. It should go without saying that passwords (for alarms, bank accounts, computer log-in’s etc.) should never be shared unless absolutely necessary.

Password security is vital to not only allow you safe access to your most private and confidential information, it ensures that what you want to remain private, remains that way.

Failure to adhere to basic password security principles will result in easy security breaches by criminals.

5 Measures for effective password security

  1. Ensure passwords contain letter, numbers, capital letters and special characters.
  2. Use a password manager to help generate and keep track of strong, random passwords (KeePass and LastPass   | see article by HTG: Password Managers).
  3. Use two factor authentication.
  4. Back up all sensitive information regularly to at least three different places i.e. a cloud storage account, an external hard drive, a CD/DVD or flash-drive.
  5. Keep antivirus software up-to-date.
